You can actually do both The Sonos devices that have mics built in must be set to one or the other for each speaker, but you can setup control for both. A way to tell the home mini to _always_ use the Sonos for all audio output seems ideal. In my living room I have a playbar, sub and two play 3’s - none of which supports GA. There's no doubt that Sonos and Google are aware, so I can't imagine this is very low on the priority list. Sonos has stated officially that it will happen, or when that might be though. Then again, they rarely give out that kind of information.
Use the Google Assistant with your Sonos speaker
Sonos creates speakers that provide quality multi-room audio. Usually, you would need to utilize the Sonos app to control its speakers. However, recently Sonos has created a line of its speakers that work with Google Assistant to allow you to use the voice assistant to use your speakers.
Before Sonos sued Google in January, the two companies worked closely to bring Assistant to Sonos speakers. I have a sonos beam with GA, and a google hub in the same room. I can"t set my beam as the default speaker for music in google home. So when I ask to play radio or sonos the hub starts playing, instead of the sonos hub. To set a default playback device for a speaker, smart display or Smart Clock, you must be a member of the same home as that Google Assistant device. T.However, if you go into the same menu from a google home mini it only lists google home speakers.
Set a default speaker, smart display or TV
You get to that menu when you select a Beam or Sonos One from the list of "Assistant devices" in the Google assistant app settings. Once set up using the steps above, you’re able to use any of your voice-enabled Sonos devices to control any of your smart home accessories. Of course, you would still have to say “Hey, Google," but this would allow you to eliminate the need for a Nest Hub or Nest Hub Mini. Setting Sonos speaker as the default speaker
It only allows me to set Bluetooth enabled speakers... Once your system is set up, you may notice that you can no longer easily control the volume of your Google Home device. When you ask it to change volume (“Ok Google, set volume to 6”), your Google Home speaker will default to changing the volume on its default speaker, the Sonos system.
When Assistant on Sonos launched last May, the Sonos One or Beam sound bar could not be set as the default speaker. To set-up, select an Assistant device in the Google Home app and visit “Device settings” by tapping the gear icon in the upper-right corner. Scroll down to “Default music speaker” and select your Sonos device. I can set my Sonos 1 SL’s to be the default speakers of any of the GH minis I have without a problem.
If the One or Beam is currently grouped with other Sonos speakers, it will play on the current group. Cause if that's so, I'm getting rid of all of this and just getting Chromecast enabled speakers. You can connect any Sonos voice-enabled speaker, including the Sonos Move. Other Sonos speakers that can use Google Assistant include the Sonos Arc, Beam, Move, One, and Roam. I’ve seen the ‘refresh issue' before with the Google Apps.
If you want the Home speaker in your office to sync playback to the Sonos speaker in your office, you can set up that up in the Google Home app. So it looks like the Sonos integration with Google assistant is worse that I originally thought. Not only Sonos speakers cannot be set as a default target, then don't seem to use the same backend search then Google assistant. When I request something to be played on the Sonos system by Google home, the answer I get it not the same voice and the search result for songs are not the same.
Tap the radio button to the right of one of your devices underListen onfor default audio playback. Or Chromecast Audio plugged into a speaker system, you might want the audio to play through that instead. Of course, you can choose which device you want the music to play on by saying something like, "OK, Google, play Manchester Orchestra on ."
Google may have the most affordable multi-room audio setup, but Sonos has one of the best-sounding ones, especially at this price. I literally wasted 2hrs linking Play 5 stereo pair to Google assistant - it took endless renamings, unlinkings, etc. Sonos play 5/ Google Assistant integration is basically rubbish, an alpha product mvp. All it can do is to play something on the Sonos, after adding a long, convoluted “play xx on Family Room”. So I thought okay I can move a Sonos One from another room to the living room to act as GA hub there - no sir, it is a full 5.1 setup so it is not allowed. That's a highly desired feature that has not been implemented yet.
Unfortunately, they are competing multiroom systems, and this likely won’t change anytime soon. Now that everything is set up, you can control the speakers with your typical Google commands. These commands include saying, “Hey Google, play music,” “... ” With this Google integration, you’re also able to use other commands to control your smart home, get answers to questions, or manage your schedule. Even though Google and Sonos went through litigation battles in the past, you’re still able to connect your speakers to Google’s smart display. While Sonos has Assistant, hotword/voice recognition is widely panned compared to first-party Google devices.
